Single-Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS)
Single-Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS) is an advanced minimally invasive surgical technique that allows certain gynecologic procedures to be performed through one small incision, typically hidden within the belly button. Using specialized instruments and a small camera, surgery can be completed safely and effectively with minimal disruption to surrounding tissue.
When is SILS used?
SILS may be an option for select gynecologic procedures, including:
- Ovarian cyst removal
- Removal of ovaries or fallopian tubes
- Hysterectomy (in appropriate cases)
- Endometriosis treatment
- Risk-reducing or preventive surgery
- Certain early-stage gynecologic conditions
Your provider will determine whether SILS is appropriate based on your diagnosis, anatomy, and overall health.
Benefits of SILS
- Single, discreet incision
- Minimal visible scarring
- Less postoperative pain
- Faster recovery
- Shorter hospital stay
- Earlier return to daily activities
