Breast Reconstruction (After Mastectomy)<\/h2>\n

The Problem:<\/strong> Most patients undergo breast reconstruction following surgical removal of the breast for cancer (mastectomy). Other reasons may include congenital or traumatic deformities, or any medical condition that may result in a breast deformity.
\nThe Goal:<\/strong> Losing a breast can be an incredibly traumatic experience for women. Our goal is to reduce this trauma by reconstructing the breast.
\nThe Procedure:<\/strong> There are numerous techniques in breast reconstruction that can be categorized as either implant reconstruction or flap reconstruction (using your own tissue to make the breast). Sometimes these modalities are combined. Dr. Goodwin will explain to you all the treatment options. Based on your health, body habits and goals, together, you and Dr. Goodwin will determine the plan for reconstruction.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Both forms of breast reconstruction\u2014implant or flap reconstruction\u2014usually require several stages to completion. Every patient requires a customized plan for an optimal result. After creating the breast size and shape, as well as symmetry between the two breasts, the last two steps are creation of the nipple and areola.<\/p>\n

There are many options in breast reconstruction. Many plastic surgeons do not perform some of the more complex reconstructive procedures. It is Dr. Goodwin\u2019s opinion that patients should be informed of all their options before proceeding with breast reconstruction.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Dr. Goodwin is fellowship-trained in breast reconstruction and microsurgery. He is well-versed in the most advanced techniques for breast reconstruction using implants or your own tissue (flap reconstruction). He has extensive experience performing perforator flap reconstruction including the Deep Inferior Epigastric Artery Perforator (DIEP) flap and the Superior Gluteal Artery Perforator (SGAP) flap. These are free flap reconstructions that provide tissue and skin to the breast while sparing the patient\u2019s underlying muscle.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Insurance Coverage:<\/strong> Even though breast reconstruction is a patient\u2019s choice and therefore, an elective surgery, it is still reconstruction. It is usually covered by health insurance.<\/p>\n
