MEDICALLY SUPERVISED WEIGHT MANAGEMENT – WEIGHT LOSS/DETOX

Merino Medical & Wellness offers a range of options for individuals who wish to improve their health and wellbeing through medically supervised weight management. Pamela Merino, MD, Board-Certified in Obesity Medicine, leads our program. We have nutritionists on staff to provide you with ongoing support.

At Merino Medical & Wellness, all our weight loss programs have a solid foundation in medicine and begin with a complimentary consultation and Body Composition Test (BIA). The BIA test utilizes state-of-the-art technology to assess your “body composition”-the measurement of body fat in relation to lean body mass, which is an integral part of a health and nutrition assessment. We’ll monitor and track your weight loss progress until you reach your ideal weight.

Our expert staff is trained to provide individualized attention and accommodate your personal preferences in a caring environment and has been facilitating our patients’ weight loss and helping them to keep it off, for more than 20 years. We have designed our programs to help you and support you step by step, to your goal weight, transitioning you into the Maintenance Program to keep you on track towards optimal health.

Whether you are trying to make a significant change or just shed a few pounds, we will design a medically supervised program tailored to your particular needs. Let us help you set realistic goals for weight loss success.

We will show you ways to avoid roadblocks along the way and how to deal with them when they do appear (like your favorite aunt’s apple pie).

We offer weight management tools, ranging from FDA-approved Natural Supplements with minimum supervision for patients who would like to drop a few pounds, to weekly visits under clinical care for those patients seeking to lose 10 pounds or more.

We’ve designed our program with close medical supervision for your safety. We see improvement in most medical conditions with losing weight and make adjustments or take away some of your regular medications as you progress.

While there are symptoms that may point to a disorder of the thyroid gland, which could affect your weight, the best and most accurate way to know for sure is by having a thorough medical checkup. When you have your annual wellness exam, express your concerns about your thyroid to your healthcare provider. In most cases, your doctor will include your thyroid levels in your blood tests.

Prepare yourself by setting goals. Think ahead to possible roadblocks along the way and how to deal with them. Plan a visit and talk to Dr. Merino about creating an eating plan that’s right for you. Remember, it’s never wise to follow fad diets, go without eating, or to try to lose weight too fast.

Think about where you eat. It may be helpful to pick a specific room in the house and not eat anywhere else. When eating out, try to select restaurants that feature low- calorie foods on the menu.
Decide how to handle temptation. When people offer you high-calorie foods, learn how to turn them down politely (“No thank you. I’m watching my weight.”), but firmly (“I’m doing this for health reasons.”)
Eat slowly, take smaller portions and avoid seconds helpings.
Eat a few light meals each day instead of three big meals. Don’t skip meals.
Select a variety of healthy, high fiber foods like fruit, vegetables, whole-grain cereals and pasta, dried peas and beans. For high protein foods, select low fat or fat-free dairy products, lean meat, fish and skinless poultry. (Think “Mediterranean Diet,” which is not a diet per se, but a healthy, delicious way of enjoying life).
Prepare foods in ways that help remove fat, like baking, boiling, broiling, grilling, roasting or stewing. Don’t fry foods in oil.
Study food labels and avoid foods that are high in added sugars, saturated fat, trans fat, sodium, and calories.
Avoid pastries, sugar-sweetened beverages, candy bars, pies, and cakes. Go for healthy snacks like fruits and crunchy veggies.
Drink lots of water. Treat yourself to a nice cup of matcha tea. Limit alcohol and other high-calorie drinks.
No soda!

PLAN AHEAD
If stress, anxiety or boredom sometimes leads you straight to the fridge, be sure to have a strategy in place:
You can take up a new interest (or a hobby that you already enjoy), go for a brisk walk, call your best friend or read a good book. Make a list of healthy and fun alternatives to snacking and refer to it when temptation strikes.
Make sure to be realistic. Setbacks do occur. If you go off your diet, don’t quit and don’t be upset with yourself. Take a deep breath and get back on track.
