When should I start going to the gynecologist?<\/h3>\n

You should start by going to the gynecologist between 13 and 15 years of age. Starting treatment at this age can help you better understand the changes your body is going through so you know what to expect and how to identify any abnormalities.<\/p>\n

It also helps you and the team at MyDoc Women\u2019s Health Specialists establish a relationship for open communication and trust.<\/p>\n

What can I expect at my appointment?<\/h3>\n

During your appointment, you may spend a lot of time talking to one of the female practitioners at MyDoc Women\u2019s Health Specialists so that she can learn about you and your health concerns.<\/p>\n

She\u2019s going to want to learn more about your period, including the start date of your last menstrual periods, the length of your period, and how you feel before and during menstruation. If you\u2019re sexually active, it\u2019s important to be open and honest with the team so that they can provide the best care.<\/p>\n

In addition to talking with you, the team also conducts both a physical and pelvic exam during your appointment. The physical exam is similar to what you may expect at your regular doctor\u2019s office and includes a check of your height and weight, temperature, blood pressure, and heart rate.<\/p>\n

During the pelvic exam, you lie down on the gynecology table with your feet in stirrups so the female practitioner can examine your outer genitalia. She then uses a speculum and palpation to examine your organs.<\/p>\n

Will I need any individual tests?<\/h3>\n

You may not need any individual tests during your exam. You won\u2019t need a Pap test, which tests for cervical cancer and is administered by your doctor until you\u2019re 21.<\/p>\n

However, the team at MyDoc Women\u2019s Health Specialists may recommend immunizations to prevent illness, such as:<\/p>\n
