Every woman should have a complete examination at least once a year. This includes a breast exam, pelvic exam, Pap smear if indicated, and talking to your doctor about any other medical concerns, such as weight, sexual activity, and other health and lifestyle issues.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>Contraception <\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>

Contraceptive care is part of your overall healthcare. There are several different birth control methods, including hormonal methods, IUDs (intrauterine devices to prevent pregnancy), Depo-Provera\u00ae (a quarterly injection that suppresses ovulation), Nexplanon (implantable contraceptive rod), NuvaRing\u00ae (a small flexible ring that you wear inside your vagina to stop ovulation), the Pill, and others.<\/p>\n

<\/i><\/i><\/span>HPV Vaccination (Gardasil 9)<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>

Gardasil 9 is an FDA-approved vaccine that can help protect you from future cervical cancer. This vaccine induces immunity to the nine most common strains of the HPV virus that cause cervical cancer and genital warts. It is approved for use in males and females from ages 9-45, and can help to prevent other non-cervical cancers, such as cancer of the penis, rectum, anus, and oropharynx (back of the throat, tongue, and tonsils). It is an important vaccine for both men and women!<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>Menstrual Disorders, Abnormal Uterine Bleeding, PMS\/PMDD<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>

Menstrual disorders affect a large percentage of women during their lifetime. This can include issues such as painful periods (dysmenorrhea), PMS symptoms, heavy bleeding, bleeding between periods, and irregular or missed periods.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>Uterine Fibroids<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>
\n

Fibroids are a very common condition. In many cases, they do not cause any symptoms. Some studies have shown that as many as 70-80% of women will develop a fibroid by the age of 50. A fibroid, usually benign, is an abnormal growth of the muscles of the uterine walls. In others, they can lead to abnormal bleeding or become so large they need to be removed.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>Sexually Transmitted Infections<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>
\n

STIs are diseases that are spread during sexual contact. In women, many sexually transmitted infections do not cause symptoms.<\/p>\n

Depending on the specific STI, symptoms in women can include burning with urination, unusual or increased vaginal discharge, pain in the lower back or abdomen, nausea, fever, bleeding between periods, discomfort during sexual activity, genital sores, and others.<\/p>\n

Common STIs include HPV, genital warts, genital herpes, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and trichomonas.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>Menopause<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>
\n

Menopause is a complex transition that occurs when a woman\u2019s ovaries no longer produce hormones the way they once did. The process is gradual, usually taking several years. The average age is 51.<\/p>\n

Symptoms can include hot flashes, emotional changes, insomnia, night sweats, vaginal dryness, urinary disorders, and others.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>Cervical Cancer Screening (Pap Smears) and Abnormal Pap Smears <\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>
\n

A Pap smear can detect the presence of cancerous or precancerous cells within the cervix. It is a quick test that is potentially life-saving, and is generally started at age 21.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>
\n

Urinary tract infections are common in adolescent and adult women. Symptoms of a UTI can include burning during urination, frequent urges to urinate, pain or pressure in the lower back or abdomen, fatigue, fever, chills, and foul-smelling urine. Most UTIs can be easily treated with antibiotics.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>Vaginitis<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>
\n

Vaginal inflammation, or vaginitis, is a condition in which the vagina becomes irritated or inflamed. Bacterial vaginosis and yeast infections are two types of vaginitis. Symptoms may include vaginal discomfort, a discharge, itching, pain, and an unpleasant odor. It may also cause sexual intercourse to become painful. Vaginitis can be caused by bacterial overgrowth, a fungus known as Candida albicans<\/em> (yeast infection), or trichomoniasis, a type of parasite that can be spread during sexual activity. Menopause can also cause vaginitis because of hormonal changes. Treatment varies depending on the specific cause of vaginitis.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Surgical Procedures We Perform<\/h2>\n<\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>Endometrial Biopsy<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>
\n

The endometrium is the tissue that lines the inside of the uterus. An endometrial biopsy is the removal of a small sample of this tissue performed to help diagnose abnormalities of the uterus. It is usually performed in the office and does not require anesthesia.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>IUD Insertion and Removal<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>
\n

An IUD, or intrauterine device, is considered to be very safe and one of the most effective methods of pregnancy prevention. IUDs can be either hormonal or non-hormonal and can even be placed in women who have never had a baby. It can be removed after several years or sooner if desired. The procedure for insertion and removal of an IUD is generally performed in the office and is well-tolerated by most women.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>Genital Wart Removal<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>
\n

There are several methods that can be used to treat genital warts in women, including medications, burning or freezing them off, or surgical wart removal. Surgery may be required if the warts do not respond to medications. Left untreated, genital warts may be spread to sexual partners or grow larger. Genital warts are also linked to cervical cancer, as well as cancer of the vulva, anus, penis, mouth, and throat.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>Dilation and Curettage (D&C)<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>
\n

D&C (dilation and curettage) is a procedure in which the doctor dilates or widens your cervix so the lining of the uterus can be scraped to remove abnormal tissue. It may be necessary after a miscarriage or in cases of abnormal bleeding.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>Colposcopy<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>
\n

Colposcopy is a procedure whereby the cervix (and\/or the vagina and vulva) are examined by using a standing microscope, called a colposcope. It is usually used to examine the cervix for abnormalities when a Pap smear indicates abnormal cells. Biopsies are often done of the abnormal area during the Colposcopy exam.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>LEEP<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>
\n

LEEP stands for loop electrosurgical excision procedure. LEEP uses a very low-voltage current to surgically remove abnormal tissue samples from the cervix. It can also be used for certain types of precancer or persistent Pap smear abnormalities, and can safely remove large pieces of the cervix in the office.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>Endometrial Ablation<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>
\n

The endometrium is the specialized tissue that lines the inside of the uterus. For some women, abnormal bleeding or heavy bleeding is persistent and needs to be treated. Ablation can safely burn tissue using a low-voltage current to heat up specific areas. We offer the advanced NovaSure\u00ae procedure, which uses precisely measured radiofrequency electrical pulses emitted by a hand-held wand. This procedure may also work to possibly avoid a hysterectomy in the future.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>Hysteroscopy<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>
\n

Hysteroscopy is a procedure that utilizes a Hysteroscope, a small camera that is introduced through the cervix into the uterus to diagnose and treat certain conditions such as polyps, fibroids and other abnormalities of the lining of the uterus. It can be performed in the office or on an outpatient basis and is well-tolerated..<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>Laparoscopy<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>
\n

Laparoscopy is a minimally-invasive surgical procedure that allows your doctor to see within the abdomen using a thin, telescope-like instrument inserted through a small surgical opening (roughly the size of a dime).<\/p>\n

Once placed, the device allows your doctor to view internal structures and organs such as your ovaries, fallopian tubes and uterus. This procedure may be utilized for several indications including ovarian cyst removal, tubal ligation and hysterectomy.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>Ovarian Cyst Removal<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>

A normal ovarian cyst is a fluid-filled sac that develops within an ovary, often during ovulation, when an egg is released each month. Many women have ovarian cysts that do not cause symptoms, however in some cases they may need to be removed if they are large, persistent, or cause pain. They usually can be removed by laparoscopy, an outpatient surgical procedure.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>Tubal Ligation<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>
\n

A tubal ligation is a procedure in which the fallopian tubes, which are necessary for pregnancy, are cut, blocked, or removed to prevent pregnancy. The procedure is performed either within a day or so of a vaginal delivery, at the time of a cesarean section, or laparoscopically on an outpatient basis.<\/p>\n

If you are certain that you do not wish to become pregnant, your doctor can advise you about the risks and specifics of a tubal ligation.<\/p>\n
