Welcome to the office of Dr. Ana M. Hernandez-Puga, conveniently located in the Baptist\/Kendall area. At our pediatric<\/a> practice, we strive to keep our patients healthy and happy, and our mission is to accomplish this goal in a compassionate and efficient way.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>Well Visits<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>

The cornerstone of pediatrics is well child care. It provides us with an opportunity to evaluate your child\u2019s growth and development \u2014 from the earliest smiles and words to their concerns about sex and drug use as teens. Patients from birth through age 21 are required to have a complete physical examination to participate in our practice.<\/p>\n

New patients will receive record release forms to be sent to your previous doctors so we may receive past records. It is ideal if we receive such records prior to a check-up so we can determine if any further immunizations or laboratory tests should be done.<\/p>\n

A complete physical exam at our office includes height, weight, head circumference (for infants), evaluation of vision and hearing (in older children), an estimate of development and any necessary vaccinations. We allow ample time for discussions of issues related to your child\u2019s home, school and peer relationships.<\/p>\n

Since most camps and schools require physical exam forms to be current, it is important that physical exams be performed yearly. Such regular exams set the tone for anticipatory guidance and good preventative health care. While recalls for yearly check-ups are sent out periodically, please try to call well in advance for your child\u2019s exam.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

We strongly believe in the safety and importance of routine childhood vaccinations. We therefore require that all patients be vaccinated as per the routine childhood vaccination schedule of the American Academy of Pediatrics and Center for Disease Control. Read our vaccine policy.<\/p>\n

All children and young adults should receive all of the recommended vaccines according to the schedule published by the Centers for Disease Control and the American Academy of Pediatrics.<\/p>\n

Vaccinating children and young adults may be the single most important health-promoting intervention that we perform as health providers and that you can perform as parents\/caregivers. The recommended vaccines and the schedule of their administration are the results of years of scientific study and data gathering on millions of children by thousands of our brightest scientists and physicians.<\/p>\n

It is for these reasons that we require all parents to vaccinate their children according to the recommended schedule. We use standardized screening tools at various ages of early childhood to aid in identifying children with potential developmental delays. Completing the Ages and Stages Questionnaires and the MCHAT-R Questionnaires is vital to your child\u2019s care. In completing the questionnaires, this allows you to be an active participant in your child\u2019s overall care. Discovering deficits in your child\u2019s development allows us to provide additional resources for further evaluation and therapy to ensure your child reaches their full potential for development. The Ages and Stages Questionnaires screen and assess the developmental performance of children in the areas of communication, gross motor skills, fine motor skills, problem solving, and personal-social skills.<\/p>\n

Many teens face common issues of adolescence, such as peer pressure, academic expectations, family expectations and changing bodies. Children and teens express feelings of sadness in different ways than adults. Teen depression can affect a teen regardless of race, gender, social background, income level, school or other achievements. We use a standardized screening tool to assess our 12 years through 21 years of age for depression. Early detection leads to early intervention to provide our teens and young adults tools to manage their overall mental health from adolescence and beyond.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

The most important way to help your teen with depression is to recognize the signs or symptoms of depression. Is your teen sleeping more or less than usual? Is your teen eating more or less than usual? Is your teen short in temper and moody? Are they more tearful or crying more easily? Has their school performance dropped? Have they withdrawn from friends and family? If yes call your pediatrician and make an appointment. Your pediatrician can assess your teenager and treat them or refer them to the proper specialist as appropriate.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

In children, an annual visit is extremely important. Children will get their vaccines at that visit as per the recommended schedule. During that annual visit, the pediatrician will address eating and sleeping habits as well as school performance and social interactions. Preventive care of several diseases depending on family history will also be addressed.
