First Trimester

Wondering what exactly happens during your first trimester? Here are a few important facts.

You may not look pregnant yet, but chances are you’re feeling some changes.

What to Expect

Emotionally, you’ll be dealing with pregnancy hormones, which can make you feel pretty crazy at times. This is when your hormones will be at their strongest.

Physically, you can expect lots of changes, including bloating, headaches, fatigue, heartburn, breast swelling, increased urination, constipation, and nausea. Fortunately, these changes are usually temporary.

We’ve all heard about crazy food cravings during pregnancy – but did you also know you could begin to dislike certain foods as well? If old favorites start to turn your stomach, don’t be surprised!

A lot of exciting fetus formation happens during the first trimester. Organs take shape. Nail beds, hair follicles, vocal cords, and muscles begin to form.

Your baby will also start to move!

Your first ob-gyn visit will most likely be your longest. The doctor performs a thorough physical exam to ensure that everything is working properly. This is also your opportunity to get your questions answered by our knowledgeable staff. Feel free to email or call us today to find out more about what will happen along the path of your pregnancy!

Second Trimester

During your second trimester, mom and baby can both expect lots of big changes! For baby, their eyes and ears are moving into place. Hair is sprouting, and bones are forming. You’ll start to feel kicks and jabs from those tiny arms and legs, and your baby will begin to smell, taste, see, and hear for the first time. They can even yawn and hiccup!

New symptoms may arise

While some of your first trimester symptoms may disappear, new issues may arise, such as sensitive gums, leg cramps, dizziness, congestion, and foot swelling. All are perfectly normal and temporary. You may also experience feelings of apprehension, irritability, forgetfulness, and frustration.

Braxton Hicks Contractions

These are also normal. Your uterus may start contracting in your second trimester to prepare your body for delivery. These are known as “Braxton Hicks contractions”, and you may feel them in your lower abdomen. They’re usually weak and sporadic, but tell your doctor if the contractions become painful or regular. Last but not least, one of the most exciting things about pregnancy will happen during your second trimester: your baby’s gender will be revealed! Very exciting. You’re almost there! Our knowledgeable staff will continue to monitor both of you very carefully. Feel free to email or call us today with any questions you may have!

Third Trimester

Only one trimester to go! At this point, mommy is most likely a bit uncomfortable, but it will all be worth it when your little one arrives.

Your baby will be doing a lot of growing over the next three months, and your belly too! Your little one will be going from around two and a half pounds to approximately 6-9 pounds at week 40.

Your baby is developing amazing skills!

In addition to growing, your baby will develop some amazing skills, such as blinking, dreaming, and the ability to regulate their own body temperature! They will also receive signals from all five senses, and even begin to taste what you eat.

At this point, with all the activity going on in your belly, there are a few normal symptoms you can expect such as abdominal achiness, backaches, spotting, or Braxton Hicks contractions.

You may experience strange dreams as well as some temporary loss of bladder control. Don’t be embarrassed. These are very normal! False labor symptoms are common.
