Labiaplasty Q & A

A labiaplasty reduces the length of the labia minora, the flesh around the opening of your vulva. The outer lips of your vagina, which grow hair, are known as the labia majora. The inner lips that lead to your vaginal opening are known as the labia minora.

Labiaplasty surgery reduces the amount of tissue at the labia minora, so it doesn’t hang below the labia majora. Sometimes one side of the labia minora is longer than the other, and a labiaplasty can create evenness in the tissue.

Having an uneven or extra-long labia minora can be painful, and it can also interfere with your comfort during sexual intercourse or tug during a bike ride. A long labia can affect how you look in clothing, and can even fall out of a bathing suit. Your labia might also cause:

  • Itching
  • Irritation
  • Self-consciousness

A labiaplasty at Women to Women OB GYN Care can resolve these issues.

At Women to Women OB GYN Care, Dr. Gray and Dr. Maslyak provide both the more common trim procedure as well as the wedge procedure. During the trim procedure, your OB/GYN removes extra tissue and sews up the remaining labia. In a wedge procedure, they remove a pie-shaped selection of tissue and trim extra folds in your clitoral hood.
Labiaplasty does require surgery to a sensitive area, so you can expect to need at least a week off work to recover. The doctors recommend you ice the area regularly during this initial healing period to reduce swelling and pain. After four to six weeks, you can resume wearing tampons and having sexual intercourse.

You may experience minor swelling for up to six months following a labiaplasty, but the most evident swelling should reduce in six weeks.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, a labiaplasty has a satisfaction rate of more than 90%. Women find relief from the pain caused by the twisting and tugging of the labia and appreciate that the labia minora no longer hangs below the labia majora. If you think you could benefit from a labiaplasty, call the office of Women to Women OB GYN Care or book an appointment online today.
