Pelvic Ultrasound Q & A

A pelvic ultrasound is a diagnostic procedure that uses sound waves to create images of the organs and tissues within your pelvic cavity, including your:

  • Vagina
  • Cervix
  • Ovaries
  • Fallopian tubes
  • Uterus
  • Endometrium (uterine lining)
  • Bladder

A pelvic ultrasound can help your provider diagnose gynecologic conditions or monitor the progress of a pregnancy and the health of your baby.

A pelvic ultrasound helps Dr. Bardawil obtain an accurate diagnosis for many conditions, including:

  • Uterine or ovarian abnormalities
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Abnormal bleeding
  • Pelvic pain
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Endometriosis

Dr. Bardawil may also order a pelvic ultrasound to diagnose early pregnancy. Should you be diagnosed with a gynecologic health concern, Dr. Bardawil offers a variety of office procedures and minimally invasive surgery options to treat many common conditions.

A pelvic ultrasound is a painless, non-surgical procedure performed right in the clinic. Depending on the reason for your pelvic ultrasound, you may need to have a full bladder before the test is performed.

When it’s time to begin, you’ll recline comfortably with your feet in stirrups. Most of the time, Dr. Bardawil performs the ultrasound in the office during the same visit.  Depending on the condition, a transabdominal ultrasound, a transvaginal ultrasound, or both may be performed.

Transabdominal ultrasound

During a transabdominal ultrasound, your technician places a gel solution on your lower abdomen and then passes a handheld transducer over the area to obtain an image of your bladder and your pelvic region in general. When this is complete, you can empty your bladder before proceeding.

Transvaginal ultrasound

For a transvaginal ultrasound, your technician gently inserts a small wand lubricated with ultrasound gel into your vagina to obtain images of your uterus, endometrium, and ovaries.

Dr. Bardawil will discuss your results at the same time as he’s doing your pelvic ultrasound.

Sometimes, you might need a follow-up ultrasound to monitor an early pregnancy or to follow-up on an ovarian cyst or fibroids.
