Prolapse is a condition in which an organ slides out of place and droops or descends. Prolapse is common in your pelvic region. Your pelvic floor is a cradle of muscles and connective tissues that support your reproductive organs and urinary and digestive tracts. Pelvic floor disorders and weakness can reduce the support available to your organs and allow them to slip out of place.

Many of your pelvic organs can prolapse including your:

  • Uterus
  • Bladder
  • Vagina
  • Rectum

If you think you might have pelvic prolapse, make an appointment at Lake OB-GYN Associates of Mid-Florida, LLC for diagnosis and treatment.

Pelvic prolapse can cause a range of painful and disruptive symptoms:

  • Urinary incontinence
  • Lower back pain
  • Painful sex
  • Full feeling in your pelvis
  • Feeling like something is coming out of your vagina
  • Constipation
  • Bleeding

In severe cases, you might see or feel the prolapsed organ outside of your vagina or anus. Your symptoms also depend on the prolapsed organ. For example, if you have a prolapsed bladder, you’re more likely to have urinary incontinence, while a prolapsed uterus or vagina causes painful sex or irregular vaginal bleeding.

In most cases, prolapse is caused by a condition that puts excessive pressure on your pelvic floor. For example, pregnancy and childbirth can lead to prolapse. A chronic cough, obesity, or constipation can also lead to prolapse.

The doctors at Lake OB-GYN Associates of Mid-Florida, LLC begin treatment with a comprehensive exam to diagnose your prolapse and the severity of your condition. In addition to a pelvic exam, your doctor might also order digital imaging tests like ultrasounds and MRIs to gather more information about your prolapse.

Then, depending on your condition, they create a customized treatment plan. You could benefit from pelvic floor physical therapy or your doctor could prescribe a pessary — a flexible device that you insert into your vagina — to support your drooping organs. In severe cases, your doctor will recommend surgery to repair or remove the prolapsed organ and its supportive tissue.

You can reduce your risk of prolapse by practicing Kegel exercises, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding constipation.

Patient Feedback

Dr. Lee and Dr. Britt are by far best the gynecologists in Central Florida. They always make me feel welcome and it’s wonderful to see the same doctors for over 10 years. The Leesburg office is in dire need of some updating and I wished there was more hand sanitizer readily available, but that has nothing to do with the outstanding care that Dr. Lee and Dr. Britt give.

Dr Wood is a fantastic Doctor. She is so sweet and is so caring, knowledgeable, through and takes the time to listen and discuss all my concerns and questions. I have been going to her for over a decade. She is wonderful in her profession and I am very comfortable and grateful to be in her care . She’s the best in my opinion !!!

This was my first time meeting Dr Lee and I found her to be a delight!! She was knowledgable and very professional and these traits were combined with a great sense of humor and a gentle, caring relational style. I enjoyed my time with her very much!!!
