Ultrasounds are noninvasive procedures that use sound wave technology to generate images of your internal organs. The team at Lake OB-GYN Associates of Mid-Florida, LLC uses ultrasound to assess the health of your baby during your pregnancy and to evaluate your reproductive organs to assist in the diagnosis of a gynecologic condition.

Ultrasounds are safe and painless and generally don’t require any special preparation prior to undergoing the procedure.

There are two types of ultrasounds:

  • Transabdominal ultrasound
  • During a transabdominal ultrasound, a transducer (ultrasound wand) is placed on the skin of your abdomen to generate images of your internal organs.

Transvaginal ultrasound
With a transvaginal ultrasound, the transducer is placed in your vagina to allow better imaging of your reproductive organs.

Your doctor at Lake OB-GYN Associates of Mid-Florida, LLC determines the type of ultrasound you’ll need during your consultation.

Your doctor at Lake OB-GYN Associates of Mid-Florida, LLC determines the number of ultrasounds you need and when based on your specific prenatal needs. In general, your doctor will perform 2-3 ultrasounds during your pregnancy.

Your first ultrasound is usually conducted at your first prenatal care visit to confirm you are pregnant and to estimate your due date. Your second ultrasound is done during your second trimester and is used to assess the health of your baby and evaluate your reproductive organs.

If needed, your doctor will recommend a third ultrasound during your last trimester to assess the amount of amniotic fluid in your uterus and to measure your baby’s heart rate.

Ultrasounds are also used for various tests throughout your pregnancy, including the fetal nuchal translucency test to screen for genetic birth conditions like Down’s syndrome. The nonstress test is used to monitor your baby’s heart rate.

If you’re experiencing symptoms such as pelvic pain or abnormal bleeding, your doctor at Lake OB-GYN Associates of Mid-Florida, LLC will recommend an ultrasound to rule out or confirm an underlying cause. Gynecologic conditions that can be diagnosed during an ultrasound include:

  • Uterine fibroids
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Miscarriage

Your doctor can also recommend an ultrasound to evaluate the structure of your reproductive organs.
