Some women are self-conscious about the appearance or structure of their genitalia. Following pregnancy, or simply as a result of aging, the inner vaginal lips (known as the labia minora) can protrude beyond the outer lips (known as the labia majora), resulting in reduced sexual desire, poor sexual self-esteem, and even discomfort with undergarments or during intercourse.
Fortunately, there is a solution that can correct this condition and restore both sexual pleasure and confidence. It’s called vaginal labiaplasty, or vaginal rejuvenation surgery. This procedure involves reducing the external genitalia and beautifying it according to a patient’s preference.
Vaginal labiaplasty effectively reshapes the inner and/or outer vaginal lips. It’s a common procedure performed at Levin’s Women’s Health & Wellness Center by our board-certified physicians under local anesthesia, depending on the complexity of the procedure.
We use a wedge excision method or a linear approach, depending on individual needs and circumstances that preserves normal sensation while restoring a more youthful vaginal appearance. Incisions made during vaginal labiaplasty are discreetly hidden along the edge of the inner labia or along the inside of the outer labia. More importantly, the procedure – which can take anywhere from one to three hours to complete – reduces the discomfort of both physical and sexual activity.
The healing process and length of recovery from vaginal labiaplasty will vary from patient to patient. It is natural to experience some bruising, swelling, and minor discomfort following the procedure. Bed rest is typically recommended the day of the procedure, but most patients can return to work or resume their normal activities within three to seven days, though it is advisable to refrain from strenuous activity and sexual intercourse for several weeks following the procedure.

The ideal candidates for vaginal labiaplasty are women who:
- troubled by the enlarged or asymmetric size of their inner labia
- Experience pain or discomfort during sex or other physical activities
- embarrassed by their appearance in swimwear and other types of clothing
- Want a smoother, more refined contour to their labia
- Desire a reduction in the size of their pubic mound
