Intrauterine Device (IUD)

Intrauterine Device (IUD)

Intrauterine devices are a long-term birth control option for women. An intrauterine device (IUD) is a little, t-shaped device that is inserted into the uterus to provide birth control. It can prevent pregnancy for 3 to 10 years depending on the type of IUD. There are 2 types of IUDs, non hormonal (Paragard), and hormonal which contain the hormone progestin (Mirena®, Kyleena®, Skyla®, and Liletta®). Your doctor will guide you to decide which IUD is right for you.

A copper IUD prevents fertilization by making the uterus and fallopian tubes produce fluid containing copper that is toxic to sperm. Paragard is the only copper IUD, and it can prevent pregnancy for up to 10 years. Paragard is hormone-free and can be used whether or not you have had a child.

A hormonal IUD prevents fertilization by making the mucus in the cervix thick and sticky so sperm can’t get through to the uterus, as well as keeping the lining of the uterus too thin for a fertilized egg to implant.

Mirena®

Mirena is a hormonal IUD that prevents pregnancy for up to 5 years and can also treat heavy periods. Mirena is recommended for women who have had at least 1 child.

Kyleena™

Kyleena is a hormonal IUD that can prevent pregnancy for up to 5 years. Kyleena releases the lowest dose of hormones for the longest amount of time, compared to other IUDs. It can be used by women whether they have given birth or not.

Skyla®

Skyla is a hormonal IUD made by the same company as Mirena and Kyleena but this IUD is smaller. It may be less likely to be expelled in women who have never had a baby because of its smaller size. Skyla can be used for up to 3 years to prevent pregnancy.

Liletta®

Liletta is a hormonal IUD that is effective in preventing pregnancy for up to 3 years and women can use it regardless of if they have given birth.

Our Services

Obstetrics

The field of obstetrics caters to the needs of women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period.  By developing a strong partnership with you we want to ensure a happy, safe, and successful delivery. Pregnancy is a very special time in a woman’s life, and it should be attended with special care.

Childbirth Classes

This class is intended to provide our expecting couples with preparation for the birth of their baby. Each class is a four-hour session.

Gynecology

Although the field of gynecology is not in women’s good books, its existence has helped diagnose and detect numerous health issues that affect women during their reproductive age. While obstetrics takes care of women during pregnancy and the postpartum period, gynecology treats all other women, from puberty to menopause.
