PELVIC FLOOR REHABILITATION
PELVIC FLOOR THERAPY
What is the Pelvic Floor:
The pelvic floor consists of muscles that form a ‘sling’ from the pubic bone to the coccyx. This sling supports and surrounds your bladder, rectum, prostate in men, and vagina and uterus in women. The pelvic floor muscle tends to weaken or tighten as we age or experience body changes. As the muscles weaken, you may begin to notice urinary and bowel symptoms. The pelvic muscles surround the urethra and rectum. When they are weak or too tight, the sling does not work properly, resulting in urinary incontinence, sexual dysfunction, as well as inability to control gas and bowel contents.
Evaluation: On the initial visit, your history, symptoms and muscle strength will be assessed. A personalized plan of care will be developed specifically for you. This plan of care will consist of: Rehabilitation, Stimulation and Bladder Retraining. Visits are weekly (6-8 weeks) and will take approximately 30 minutes a session.
Biofeedback: A small instrument is used to determine that the correct muscle begins to fatigue. After isolating the appropriate muscles, an exercise plan is developed with specific muscle strengthening instructions to do at home.
Stimulation: This is done with a very small vaginal (woman) or rectal (men) sensor. This is used to stimulate the pelvic muscles in order to contract the pelvic floor muscles.
