What can you expect?

Patients should know as much as they can about what the exams look like so that when they come there is no fear or anxiety. Our gynecology exams include a number of diagnostic procedures that determine the health of the female genital tract. Usually, they start around the age of 16 and last up to 70, depending on each patient.

An ordinary exam procedure usually begins with anamnesis – an open conversation between the doctor and patient in order to get as much information about their condition. Patients are encouraged to speak freely about their current state, there is no point in being shy when your health is concerned.

This is followed by an inquiry into personal and family medical history – the doctors need to ask about previous illnesses the patient or the patient’s family had. Once all the information is acquired, the exam can start. A complete rundown of the main exam procedure looks like this:

  • Colposcope exam of the outer genital parts
  • Examining the vaginal walls using a speculum or colposcope
  • Colposcope exam of the cervix, coating the surface of the cervix with a special solution
  • Taking a Pap smear and vaginal fluid smear
  • Bimanual doctor’s exam to check the characteristics of the cervix, uterus, ovaries, and oviduct
  • Ultrasound exam of the pelvic region using a vaginal probe (can be done above the belly as well) to inspect the inside of the uterus (endometrium), the structure and size of the ovaries

Once the main part of the exam is done, the doctor gives a final opinion and prescribes therapy if needed. Further diagnostic procedures can occur depending on each case. Patients are recommended not to take vaginal tablets for three nights and have their bladder emptied prior to taking an exam.

Gynecology exams usually last around 30 minutes or more. If you have questions or if you want to schedule an appointment, call our office today
