About Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialists of South Florida

About Us

Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialists of South Florida, along with Dr. Dibe Martin and Dr. Ana Vidal, is pleased to provide specialized care to pregnant women and their unborn baby in a caring and comfortable setting.

We specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of high risk pregnancy, including existing health conditions as well as conditions induced by pregnancy.
We offer a wide variety of prenatal testing both invasive and non-invasive, including comprehensive ultrasound evaluation of the unborn baby, genetic blood testing, amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling.

Our goal is to provide individualized, state of the art, and compassionate care for you and your growing family. It is important to us to not only guide you through your pregnancy, but to involve you and your family in planning for the birth of your unborn baby.

We are committed to ensuring you understand your pregnancy needs and the options available to you. Our practice promotes a healthy pregnancy through prenatal diagnosis and strives to best assist you and your unborn baby during this important time in your life.

Pregnancy can be considered high risk when there are either complications in the expecting mother or the unborn baby.  Maternal complications could be either pre-existing like hypertension or secondary to pregnancy like gestational diabetes.  Complications in the baby could be either structural malformations as well as complications from the function of the placenta.

Ultrasound has been used in the diagnosis and surveillance of pregnancy for many decades by now.  Different than x-rays or CT scan, ultrasound does not use irradiation but sound waves to produce images.  The ultrasound equipment that we use, is specially designed to be used safely in pregnant patients reducing the exposure of the unborn baby to the sound waves.  There has been no association between the ultrasound used in a clinical setting and complications of the expectant mothers or their babies.

Non-invasive prenatal testing is most commonly done from a sample of blood from the expecting mother.  Prenatal testing is done to determine the risk of an unborn baby of having genetic conditions.
Genetic testing done from maternal blood is considered as a screening tool to determine the risk of the baby of having a certain condition like an abnormal number of chromosomes.

Invasive prenatal testing includes amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling (CVS).  Amniocentesis is usually done after 16 weeks and consists in introducing a very fine needle in the amniotic cavity (fluid around the baby), and extracting amniotic fluid.  The fluid is sent to specialized laboratories for genetic and/or metabolic testing. CVS is done between 11 and 13 weeks 6 days and consists in introducing either a catheter through the vagina or a fine needle through the mother’s abdomen into the baby’s placenta to get a sample of it.  Invasive testing has a very low chance of complications

Pregnancy is the only time in life when you fall in love with someone you haven’t met

The experience at this office was great. The valet parking is only $3. The front desk staff are VERY friendly and helpful. The lady who did my ultrasound was fantastic! Both Dr. Martin and Dr. Vidal are very caring when it comes to their patients. The nurses are very professional and detailed while explaining the type of testings needed. I will always be grateful for the experience I had during my pregnancy!

Amazing doctors!!! Always took the time to answer questions and concerns we had. Thank God that they were part of the team that cared for both my children. The front desk was nice and accommodating, the nurses were wonderful at explaining the testing my wife was having and getting back to us with any questions we had. Highly recommend this MFM group.

Pleasant experience overall. The ladies at the front desk were very friendly. And the doctor and nurse were knowledgeably and attentive. The US tech was also very nice and informative. Didn’t feel rushed or like I was just a number.
