What is Pre-conception Genetic Consultation?

Genetic counseling is offered prior to pregnancy for individuals or couples at risk for certain genetic disorders, birth defects, those who have had several miscarriages, or who have certain medical conditions.

Why is Pre-conception Genetic Consultationimportant?

Pre-conception genetic counseling allowsindividuals and couples the opportunity to discuss their family, pregnancy, and medical histories. Consultation also provides time to discussoptions available for future pregnancies. If there is a family history of a genetic condition, testing for the parents or the pregnancy can be discussed, including the risks, benefits, and limitations of the test. If there is a family history of birth defects, the causes of the birth defects and any association with a genetic condition will be discussed. For couples who have had threeor more miscarriages, the genetic counseling session will cover possible causes of those miscarriages, as well as the availability of testing for the parents to identify the cause. For parents who themselves have certain medical conditions, this is the time to discuss the role those conditions may play during pregnancy. Medications taken to treat those medical conditions will bereviewed, along with any concerns regarding exposure during pregnancy.

What is an Obstetrical Ultrasound?

An obstetrical ultrasound is done to visualize the baby, fluid and placenta. Unlike x-rays, ultrasound uses sound waves and no adverse fetal effects have been reported when using this tool for diagnostic purposes. The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) discourages the use of ultrasound for recreational purposes.

How is the procedure conducted?

It is usually performed through the abdomen, but sometimes a vaginal ultrasound will be done in order to provide better images of the pregnancy. The procedure is conducted by a sonographerand all the images are reviewed by the doctor.

When are Obstetrical Ultrasounds conducted?

Some indications for an obstetrical ultrasound include dating, evaluation of the baby’s anatomy, placenta, fetal sex determination, evaluation of the cervix and others. On some occasions and depending on gestational age and the position of your baby, a 3-D ultrasound is performed.

At Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialistsof South Floridawe understand this is an important time in your family’s life. We will provide you with images so you can show your baby to family and friends.

Maternal-Fetal Medicine

Pregnancies are typically developing in a stable, predictable fashion. During this time both the mother and the baby are going through different stages leading to birth. Your fetus grows not only in size, but also develops attributes and changes morphologically over time and it is vital to keep a record of these changes and ensure they are happening orderly.

The experience at this office was great. The valet parking is only $3. The front desk staff are VERY friendly and helpful. The lady who did my ultrasound was fantastic! Both Dr. Martin and Dr. Vidal are very caring when it comes to their patients. The nurses are very professional and detailed while explaining the type of testings needed. I will always be grateful for the experience I had during my pregnancy!

Amazing doctors!!! Always took the time to answer questions and concerns we had. Thank God that they were part of the team that cared for both my children. The front desk was nice and accommodating, the nurses were wonderful at explaining the testing my wife was having and getting back to us with any questions we had. Highly recommend this MFM group.

I am not sure why they have such awful reviews because they are quite pleasant. These people go the extra mile to help their patients. We came in on the wrong date and they were still able to see us and the wait time was only 15-20 minutes. Great staff great people will definitely revisit.
