Genetic Counseling: Understanding Your Options

Genetic counseling helps you understand your chances of passing on or encountering certain genetic conditions, and which testing options make sense for you. Common reasons to consider it include advanced maternal age, being a carrier for a genetic condition, a family history that includes a child with a genetic condition, or a positive screening result or ultrasound finding during your current pregnancy. At Pembroke Perinatal Center, counseling is provided directly by our physicians.

Information that helps you make confident decisions

Genetic counseling isn’t about delivering bad news. It’s about giving you clear, personalized information so you can understand your options and make the choices that are right for your family.

Who should consider it

The most common reasons are advanced maternal age, being a carrier for a genetic condition, having had a child born with a genetic condition, or a positive genetic test or ultrasound finding during your current pregnancy.

Who provides it

Your counseling is provided directly by our physicians, both of whom are MDs with specialized expertise in exactly these questions.

The testing is tailored to you

There’s no one-size-fits-all panel. Your options depend on your history, any prior testing, and what your referring OB has already ordered, so we start by reviewing all of that with you. Available options may include maternal blood tests that screen for or evaluate genetic conditions. In certain situations, diagnostic testing of the baby may be recommended. Because that involves a procedure, we discuss it in detail with you, including the benefits, the limitations, and the risks, so you can decide what’s right for you.

Support when answers are hard

Sometimes results are difficult or uncertain, and you won’t face that alone. We focus on clear communication and compassion, take the time to explain findings in a way that makes sense, and answer every question. If new questions come up after you leave, we want you to call us. We’re always glad to provide more clarity.

Navigating it together

Whatever brings you to genetic counseling, the goal is the same: clarity, options, and a specialist beside you as you weigh them.

Megha M.

Had great experience, Dr.Romary and her staff is great. So courteous all are. Each appointment I looked forward too as they gave detailed information and answered all my questions on baby growth. I had gestational diabetes and with that too, Dr. Romary guided me well to manage it with diet. She followed up to make sure my sugars were in limits and it will not affect baby’s growth. Love this place!!
