What is Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery (FPMRS)?
Also known as Urogynecology, FPMRS is a sub specialty of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Urology. This field was approved by The American Board of Medical Specialties as a certified sub-specialty in 2011 and requires additional fellowship training and certification in pelvic floor disorders after completion of residency. This training involves evaluation and management of pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence, overactive bladder, interstitial cystitis, recurrent urinary tract infections and other pelvic floor disorders. Urinary problems can also be associated with medical conditions such as diabetes, cancer and neurological disorders.
Women are sometimes reluctant to talk about these symptoms due to various reasons. The specialty addresses the concerns of these patients and aims towards appropriate management to improve the quality of life.
Dr. Sujata Yavagal is one of the few physicians in South Florida to be trained and Board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG) in the field and has completed 3 years of formal fellowship to obtain expertise in the evaluation, medical and surgical management of urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, overactive bladder and other pelvic floor disorders.
