Preconception counseling ensures you’re in optimal health for future pregnancy and delivery. Most women don’t learn they’re pregnant until they’re about 4-6 weeks along. By then, your baby could already be affected by poor nutrition, cigarette smoking, and health conditions you may have.

When you schedule a preconception appointment, you have the opportunity to learn about potential problems and take steps to treat them before you get pregnant.

It’s especially important to manage chronic diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, and being overweight because they can lead to a high-risk pregnancy.

Prenatal care follows a routine schedule for most women, although you may need more frequent check-ups if you have a high-risk pregnancy. At every appointment, Dr. Dupuy checks the baby’s growth and heart rate, as well as your blood pressure, weight, and overall health.

Routine tests are performed throughout your pregnancy to screen for health concerns, such as high blood glucose, sexually transmitted diseases, and rubella (German measles).

A high-risk pregnancy occurs when the mother’s or baby’s health is at risk. You can prevent some high-risk factors with preconception counseling, while others occur after you become pregnant.

You may have a high-risk pregnancy if you have any of the following:

  • Baby has congenital disabilities

Dr. Dupuy supports women who want a vaginal birth after cesarean section (VBAC). After a C-section, muscles at the incision site may not regain optimal strength after they heal. This potential weakness raises the risk of a uterine rupture due to pressure during a vaginal delivery.

The risk of uterine rupture is low, however, with 60-80% of women achieving a successful VBAC. Dr. Dupuy closely monitors you and the baby during a trial of labor after cesarean delivery (TOLAC) so that rapid intervention is available should problems arise.
