Ultrasound produces detailed images of organs and structures inside your body using high-frequency sound waves. A device called a transducer sends sound waves into your body, where they bounce off structures and return to the transducer. As the transducer sends the information to a computer, the waves are translated into an image.

Your ultrasound can be performed two ways, depending on the information needed:

Transabdominal ultrasound
Dr. Dupuy performs this type of ultrasound by moving the transducer over your abdomen after the doctor applies ultrasound gel to your skin. The gel facilitates sound wave transmission by creating a bond between the transducer and your skin.

Transvaginal ultrasound
Dr. Dupuy places a specially designed transducer inside your vagina. This type of ultrasound provides clearer images of pelvic organs because the sound waves don’t have to pass through your skin.

Dr. Dupuy may perform an ultrasound any time during your pregnancy. Most women only need one or two ultrasounds, but the doctor may schedule more frequent imaging if you have a high-risk pregnancy.

A first-trimester ultrasound may be done to determine the due date, or verify the location if a tubal pregnancy is suspected. Routine ultrasounds are performed in the second trimester around 18-22 weeks.

At this stage in the pregnancy, Dr. Dupuy can determine your baby’s sex. She also uses the second-trimester ultrasound to evaluate the amount of amniotic fluid, and your baby’s growth, anatomy, and position.

A third-trimester ultrasound isn’t routine but may be done to confirm your baby’s position, estimate the baby’s weight, or assess the health of you and your baby.

Ultrasound images are essential tools for detecting many gynecological health problems. Dr. Dupuy often uses transvaginal ultrasound to identify the cause of symptoms like pelvic pain and abnormal menstrual bleeding or to diagnose a tissue mass.
