ADHD Evaluation & Treatment for Children

Children are naturally active, curious, and sometimes easily distracted. However, when difficulties with attention, hyperactivity, or impulsive behavior begin to interfere with a child’s performance at school, relationships, or everyday life, it may be time to consider an evaluation for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

At Sawgrass Pediatrics, our pediatric team provides evaluation, guidance, and ongoing care for children and adolescents experiencing symptoms of ADHD. We work closely with parents and caregivers to better understand each child’s individual needs and develop an appropriate plan for supporting their health, development, and success.

What Is ADHD?

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, commonly known as ADHD, is a neurodevelopmental condition that can affect a child’s ability to concentrate, regulate impulses, organize tasks, and manage activity levels.

ADHD symptoms generally fall into three presentations:

  • Predominantly Inattentive Presentation: Difficulty maintaining attention, staying organized, following instructions, or completing tasks.
  • Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Presentation: Frequent restlessness, excessive activity, difficulty waiting or taking turns, and acting without thinking.
  • Combined Presentation: Symptoms of both inattention and hyperactivity or impulsivity are present.

The way ADHD appears can vary considerably from one child to another and may change as a child grows.

Signs of ADHD in Children

Having occasional difficulty concentrating or sitting still does not necessarily mean a child has ADHD. Symptoms become more concerning when they are persistent, developmentally inappropriate, and interfere with daily activities in more than one setting.

Possible signs of ADHD may include:

  • Difficulty paying attention or staying focused
  • Frequently losing or forgetting belongings
  • Trouble following directions
  • Difficulty completing schoolwork or other tasks
  • Excessive talking or interrupting
  • Frequent fidgeting or restlessness
  • Difficulty waiting for a turn
  • Acting impulsively
  • Trouble staying organized
  • Academic difficulties
  • Challenges interacting with classmates, siblings, or adults

Other conditions can sometimes cause symptoms that resemble ADHD, which is why a comprehensive evaluation is important.

ADHD Evaluation at Sawgrass Pediatrics

If you are concerned about your child’s attention, behavior, or school performance, the pediatricians at Sawgrass Pediatrics can help determine whether further evaluation for ADHD may be appropriate.

There is no single test used to diagnose ADHD. Instead, an evaluation considers a child’s overall health, development, behavior, and symptoms in different environments.

Because ADHD symptoms must be evaluated across multiple settings, information from parents, caregivers, teachers, and other adults who regularly interact with the child can be an important part of the process.

Sawgrass Pediatrics provides a Vanderbilt Packet as part of its patient resources. Vanderbilt assessment forms are commonly used to gather information about a child’s attention, activity level, behavior, and performance at home and at school.

Your pediatrician may also consider whether other medical, developmental, emotional, behavioral, or learning concerns could be contributing to your child’s symptoms.

ADHD Treatment and Ongoing Care

When a child is diagnosed with ADHD, treatment is individualized based on factors such as age, symptoms, overall health, and the way ADHD is affecting everyday life.

A treatment plan may include:

  • Behavioral strategies and behavior therapy
  • Parent education and support
  • Strategies for improving organization and routines
  • Coordination with teachers or school personnel
  • Medication when appropriate
  • Regular follow-up appointments to monitor progress

If medication is included in your child’s treatment plan, continued monitoring can help your pediatrician evaluate how well the treatment is working, discuss possible side effects, and determine whether adjustments may be appropriate.

Some children may also benefit from working with psychologists, psychiatrists, therapists, educational specialists, or other professionals. When additional care is needed, our pediatric team can help families determine the appropriate next steps.

Supporting Your Child at Home and School

ADHD management often extends beyond the pediatrician’s office. Consistent routines and communication among parents, healthcare providers, and educators can help children develop strategies for managing symptoms.

Helpful approaches may include creating predictable routines, breaking large assignments into smaller tasks, reducing distractions during homework, encouraging positive behaviors, and maintaining regular communication with your child’s school.

Every child is different, and finding the most effective combination of strategies may take time.
