Childhood Asthma Treatment

Asthma is a common chronic respiratory condition in children that can cause coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, and difficulty breathing. Symptoms can range from mild and occasional to more frequent episodes that interfere with sleep, exercise, school, and everyday activities.

At Sawgrass Pediatrics, our pediatricians evaluate and manage asthma in children and adolescents, helping families understand symptoms, identify possible triggers, and develop an individualized treatment plan.

What Is Childhood Asthma?

Asthma affects the airways that carry air in and out of the lungs. In children with asthma, these airways can become inflamed and narrowed, making breathing more difficult.

Asthma symptoms may come and go and can vary in severity. Some children experience symptoms primarily during exercise or respiratory illnesses, while others may have symptoms triggered by allergies, environmental exposures, or other factors.

Although asthma is a long-term condition, appropriate treatment and ongoing management can help many children control their symptoms and remain active.

Common Symptoms of Asthma in Children

Asthma does not always look the same in every child. Common symptoms may include:

  • Frequent coughing
  • Wheezing or a whistling sound when breathing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest tightness or discomfort
  • Coughing that becomes worse at night
  • Difficulty breathing during exercise or physical activity
  • Frequent coughing during colds or respiratory infections
  • Fatigue or decreased activity because of breathing difficulties

In younger children, asthma may sometimes be more difficult to recognize because symptoms can resemble other respiratory illnesses.

If your child frequently experiences coughing, wheezing, or breathing problems, a pediatric evaluation can help determine the possible cause.

What Can Trigger Asthma Symptoms?

Asthma symptoms may be triggered or worsened by a variety of environmental, physical, and medical factors.

Common asthma triggers can include:

  • Colds and other respiratory infections
  • Pollen
  • Dust and dust mites
  • Mold
  • Pet dander
  • Smoke and air pollution
  • Strong odors or fragrances
  • Exercise
  • Changes in weather or temperature
  • Allergies

Triggers vary from child to child. Identifying patterns in when symptoms occur can help families and pediatricians develop strategies to reduce exposure when possible.

Diagnosing Asthma in Children

There is no single symptom that confirms a diagnosis of asthma.

Your child’s pediatrician may consider their medical history, family history, symptoms, frequency of respiratory problems, possible triggers, and findings during a physical examination.

Depending on your child’s age and symptoms, additional testing may sometimes be recommended to evaluate lung function or rule out other possible causes of breathing problems.

Keeping track of when symptoms occur, what your child was doing at the time, and how long symptoms lasted can also provide useful information during an asthma evaluation.

Childhood Asthma Treatment

Asthma treatment is personalized based on the frequency and severity of your child’s symptoms.

Some children may only require medication when symptoms occur, while others may benefit from daily treatment designed to reduce airway inflammation and prevent asthma symptoms.

Treatment may include:

  • Quick-relief medications for sudden symptoms
  • Daily controller medications when appropriate
  • Identification and avoidance of asthma triggers
  • Monitoring symptoms over time
  • Education on the proper use of inhalers or other medications
  • An individualized asthma action plan

Your pediatrician may adjust treatment as your child grows or as their symptoms change.

What Is an Asthma Action Plan?

An asthma action plan is a written guide that helps families recognize changes in asthma symptoms and understand what steps to take.

A plan may include information about:

  • Your child’s regular asthma medications
  • How and when medications should be used
  • Common asthma triggers
  • Early warning signs of worsening asthma
  • What to do when symptoms increase
  • When to contact your pediatrician
  • When emergency medical attention may be necessary

Parents, caregivers, school nurses, coaches, and other adults who regularly care for your child may benefit from understanding the child’s asthma management plan.

Asthma and Physical Activity

Having asthma does not necessarily mean a child must avoid sports or exercise.

With appropriate treatment and symptom control, many children with asthma are able to participate fully in physical activities.

If exercise commonly causes coughing, wheezing, or difficulty breathing, speak with your child’s pediatrician. Adjustments to the treatment plan may help your child participate more comfortably and safely.

When Should You Seek Medical Care?

Contact your pediatrician if your child is experiencing recurring coughing, wheezing, difficulty breathing, or other symptoms that may suggest asthma.

Sawgrass Pediatrics offers routine pediatric care as well as same-day sick appointments, with extended weekday evening and weekend hours available at its locations.

Severe breathing difficulty can require emergency medical care. Seek immediate medical attention if your child is struggling significantly to breathe, has difficulty speaking because of shortness of breath, develops bluish or gray coloring around the lips or face, or has symptoms that are rapidly worsening.
