Pelvic Floor Therapy Q & A

Your pelvic floor contains a group of muscles that work like a sling to support the organs in your pelvis, including your bladder, uterus, and rectum. You control your bowel and bladder functions by contracting and relaxing these muscles. An inability to do so makes controlling urination and defecation difficult.

Pelvic floor therapy is a conservative approach that focuses on improving the function of your pelvic floor muscles and pelvic girdle to enable them to better support your core, bowel, bladder, and sexual function.

The doctors at My OB/GYN Specialists use pelvic floor therapy to treat a variety of conditions including:

  • Urinary incontinence and urine leakage
  • Pelvic pressure
  • Painful sex
  • Interstitial cystitis
  • Endometrial pain
The most common approach taken to pelvic floor therapy is the use of biofeedback. A physical therapist uses sensors to monitor your muscles while you try to relax and contract them. Feedback is then provided to help you work on improving your muscle coordination.

When used during pelvic floor therapy, biofeedback improved more than three-quarters of those affected by pelvic floor disorders.
Along with biofeedback, your physical therapist often recommends relaxation techniques including warm baths, yoga, and other exercises as part of your pelvic floor therapy.

The most common exercise recommended as part of pelvic floor therapy is pretending you to urinate and then holding it. Often referred to as Kegel exercises, these movements cause you to relax and tighten the muscles that control your urine flow.

The doctors at My OB/GYN Specialists also prescribe low-dose muscle relaxers to help you deal with pelvic floor dysfunction.

The doctors at My OB/GYN Specialists use surgery as a last resort and when your pelvic floor dysfunction is the result of rectal prolapse or rectocele. Rectal prolapse occurs when the tissue that lines your rectum falls into your anal opening.

When the end of your rectum pushes through the wall of your vagina, the doctors at My OB/GYN Specialists diagnose you with rectocele as the cause of your pelvic floor dysfunction.
