When to Call us

For young adults, children and babies, sickness can sometimes be difficult to spot. While it’s true that most scrapes and sniffles can be cared for at home without a visit to the doctor, we strongly urge you to contact us right away and consider visiting the nearest emergency room or activate the emergency services (911) if your child is experiencing any of the following symptoms:

  • Trouble breathing

  • Head injuries of any kind

  • Seizures of any kind

  • Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis)

  • Loss of consciousness

  • Persistent pain (especially if accompanied by loss of motion)

When to Be Concerned

Besides the above situations, the following are common signs that a child needs medical attention. Please be sure to contact us when you notice symptoms such as:

Fever

  • Birth to 3 months old: 100.4 F or higher
  • 3 months to 6 months old: 101.0 F or higher
  • 6 months to 12 months old: 103.0 F or higher
  • 12 months or older: 103.0 F or higher that does not go down when child is given Tylenol or other fever reducer

Vomiting

  • Continuous vomiting accompanied by inability to keep even small amounts of liquid down
  • Vomiting accompanied by strong abdominal pain or severe headache
  • Vomiting dark brown or green fluid and/or vomiting blood
  • Newborns or young infants with forceful vomiting (stronger and more continuous than spitting up)

“Bathroom Behavior”

  • Continuous diarrhea accompanied by severe abdominal pain and/or other symptoms
  • Diarrhea accompanied by dehydration (dry mouth, decreased urine output, no tears when crying, sunken eyes)
  • Pain when urinating

Lethargy

  • If it is difficult to wake a child up or get him or her to do any activity at all
  • Children that are slightly ‘less active’ than usual are not necessarily ‘lethargic’. If activity levels continue to decrease or child become unusually sleepy (particularly after an injury or accompanied by other symptoms), please contact us.

Cuts and abrasions

  • If bleeding rapidly soaks through several heavy bandages or dressings despite pressure
  • If cut happens outdoors and tetanus vaccines are not up to date
  • If after normal home care, wound appears to swell, ooze, or turn green or black
  • Keep in mind that certain places on the body (head, feet, hands) will bleed heavily even though a wound is quite small. Apply pressure, elevate wounded area if possible, and be patient.

Rashes

  • Any rash that appears suddenly with no explanation
  • Rashes accompanied by fever
  • Dark red or purple rashes
  • Rashes that do not ‘fade’ for a moment when skin is pressed
  • Itchy rashes not relieved by home remedies or over-the-counter anti-itch creams or ointments
