Breast Augmentation (with Implants)

The Problem: Dissatisfaction with the appearance and proportions of the body
The Goal: Transform breast size, volume and shape, resulting in a flattering, new appearance. Breast augmentation can enhance the figure, balance body proportions and boost confidence.
The Procedure: Breast augmentation involves placing an implant either beneath the breast tissue or beneath the muscle and breast tissue. Incisions may be made in the areola (the dark skin around the nipple), in the fold beneath the breast, or the axilla (armpit). Implants are made of silicone or saline.

Surgical Overview

Length: Usually 1-2 hours.
Anesthesia: General (asleep).
Hospital Stay: Outpatient in most cases.
Side Effects: Temporary soreness, swelling, change in nipple sensation and bruising. Breast may be sensitive to stimulation for a few weeks.

Risks: Lack of implant permanence —

  • Surgical removal or replacement of the implants may be required to treat problems, including:deflation; the formation of scar tissue around the implant (capsular contracture), which may cause the breast to feel tight or hard; bleeding; or infection.

  • Increase or decrease in sensitivity of nipples or breast skin, occasionally permanent. Mammography requires a special technique.

Recovery: May have draining for one to two days. Usually back to work in a few days. Abstain from physical contact with breasts for three to four weeks. Fading of scars may take several months to a year or more.
Duration of Results: Variable. Implants may require removal or replacement.
