She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania in the Biological Basis of Behavior. Following her interest in biology and children she continued on to medical school at Tufts University to pursue pediatrics. As a native Floridian, and after the birth of her first child, she moved back to south Florida to complete her residency in Pediatrics at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital.
