It’s finally time to take a break, relax, and get away for a weekend – but don’t let your trip be the end of your healthy lifestyle. We’ve put together a summer vacation checklist for ways to be mindful of your health while you travel.
- Stock up on healthy, portable snacks
For days you are on the go, these will come in handy! Keeping heart healthy nuts, protein bars, and fresh fruit in your backpack will prevent you from caving in to unhealthy options when you start getting hungry.
- Make your own meals
When booking your vacation, look for a room that has a small kitchen or kitchenette. This will not only help you save money on food, but also allow you to make nutritious and delicious meals.
- Monitor your alcohol intake
While frozen cocktails are ideal for hot summer days, they are loaded with sugar and hidden calories. Don’t overdo it on the margaritas and piña coladas and opt for a lighter drink.
- Set aside time to exercise
You don’t have to stick to your regular workout routine, but being active 20 minutes a day will help you stay in the routine. Try to incorporate exercise into your vacation by going on a hike or running on the beach.
- Explore the city on foot or bike
Ditch the tour bus and Segways and move your legs. Walking through the city allows you to see more of your surroundings while also being active. If you have more ground to cover, rent a bike and explore the city on wheels.
- Remember to hydrate
Traveling can make it more difficult to stay hydrated, especially in hot summer climates. One way to make sure you’re drinking enough water is to take a water bottle with you and refill it whenever you can.
- Get enough sleep
With early morning tours and late nights out, it’s easy to lose sleep while on vacation. Try not to plan too many activities that you don’t have time to rest, as lack of sleep can make you feel rundown.
- Take advantage of the spa
Book a massage and take some time to decompress and relax. A good time to use the spa is after a full day of traveling or a long day of exploring and being on your feet.
